Instead of just addressing how you might reconsider a story point or develop a character or setting more, this edit would contain notes, comments, and ideas in the margins, as well as track changes throughout the book writing to show you exactly how and where you might best address any concerns (ideally while being inspirational rather than prescriptive).

Editorial assessment

An editor reviews your manuscript and provides big-picture criticism in a considerably shorter editorial letter, usually 1-2 pages, which is a less comprehensive and usually more economical service.

It will cover many of the same craft components as a developmental editing a book, but with less information, fewer on-page notes, fewer examples to demonstrate concepts, and fewer suggestions for how to approach revisions than a developmental edit. Line notes are not included in the developmental edit.

A developmental edit without line comments can be a good idea if you know your book requires a lot of conceptual work. Why bother with specific sentences when you’re going to redo the whole thing anyway?

Line notes may further complicate matters if you need lengthy edits, giving you too much to think about and making it tough to see the forest for the trees.

After you’ve revised based on the developmental edit, you’ll almost certainly need a line edit.

Only line editing is permitted.

If you’re comfortable with the overall shape of your book and have received positive feedback in workshops or from beta readers, a line editing a book may be all you need to crystallize your sentences and fine-tune the other aspects.

What’s the disadvantage? You could improve a book that doesn’t function because of story, character, pacing, structure, and other issues.
