The first Punjabi Movies was Sheila, also known as Pind Di Kudi, starring the famous actor Noor Jahan; was made by K. Mehra in Calcutta in 1936 and released from Lahore. The film was a success. K.D. Mehra also performed Heer Sial (1938), which featured Noor Jahan and new artists Balo and Mn. Ismail, too, was successful.His Movies have inspired others. Studios were opened and many artists, producers, directors, and professionals from Bombay (now, Mumbai) and Calcutta (now Kolkata) moved to Lahore, among them Shanta Apte, Motilal, Chandra Mohan, Hiralal, Noor Jahan, Mumtaz Shanti, Wali, Syed Athul Atta and Shanker Hussain.

The division of the Punjab movies in 1947 affected the Punjabi movies because many Muslim artists and directors moved to Pakistan. But efforts would be made to keep Indian Punjabi movies alive. Filmmakers made Movies like Post, Do Lachhian and Bangra with some success. Tabahi, blockbuster hit; Naseebo and Qahar in 1995; Sukha; the highly acclaimed Main Maa Punjab Movies Dee (1998) who won the National Award; and Mahaul Theek Hai by Jaspal Bhatti, a short hit, were some of the biggest Movies of the last decade. Rajheed Udham Singh of Raj Babbar has done well over the past decade. A few years ago, the trend was to create successful commercial Movies with Hindi stars before. Hindi masala Movies gained prominence.
