Tangier is located in the very north of Morocco. It’s so close to Europe that you can see Spain in good weather! The North African city is relatively small and there’s not much to see or do, but it’s certainly worth the effort to visit Tangier for a day!
Sights in Tangier:
The port city Tangier is in full growth at the moment. A local told me that officially there are about one million inhabitants, but unofficially this number has already risen to three million!
Outside the city, construction is taking place in rapid succession and new neighborhoods are sprouting up like mushrooms.
I focused on the city center and the old town. There it is the most fun and there are also the best things to experience…..
Tangier Beach:
Many Moroccans, as well as tourists, visit Tangier to enjoy the beach. Tangier beach stretches for a few kilometers and is quite quiet.
With modern walking paths and dikes, it is also very pleasant to walk along and people watch.
Tangier Kasbah:
At the highest point of Tangier is the Kasbah. One of the older parts of Tangier. It’s a bit of climbing to get there, but from here you have the best view of the Strait of Gibraltar. Plus, on a clear day, you can also see the tip of Spain (Malaga)!
The whitewashed and sunny yellow houses reminded me of Mediterranean villages, but with lots of Arabic influences.
For me, this was one of the nicest parts of town to walk around quietly. There are also many beautiful parks where you can take a break, after all, that climbing before heading back to the much busier medina of Tangier.
Hafa Pub (Café Hafa)
If you get lost through the kasbah of Tangier, you can also visit the pub Hafa (Café Hafa).
This quaint pub is located right at the top of the Kasbah. It looks ridiculously small from the outside, but the various rows of terraces will have you laughing in no time! From here you have a phenomenal view of the azure sea and the many boats sailing from Morocco to Spain.
Tea, coffee, and small dishes are served at reasonable prices. Watch your watch, because you’ll quickly be busy for a few hours trying out the drinks!
The Medina of Tangier
The medina of Tangier opens and closes with a mosque. Car traffic is not allowed – and not really possible because of the narrow streets – making it a paradise for pedestrians!
In the labyrinth of alleys and streets, you can find everything. Restaurants, pubs, bakeries, souvenir stores,….. But the best of all remains just people watching.
Markets and souqs
Tucked away in the medina of Tangier are also all sorts of markets. One of the must-see markets in Tangier is the souk. This is a sight in itself!
A covered space where all sorts of things are sold. Fragrant and colorful herbs, plucked chickens without heads, all sorts of trinkets,… If you can tolerate the rancid smell of the many slaughterhouses, by all means, go to the end. There is a second hall selling fresh fish.
You don’t necessarily have to buy anything, but it’s really worth a walk around here.
Day trip from Tangier: Chefchaouen
If you still have some time, there is a day trip I can recommend to everyone. A trip to the Blue Pearl of Morocco: Chefchaouen.
This city is a crowd favorite because the old town has been completely transformed into a blue paradise. Almost every street is submerged in a certain shade of blue, giving the hilly village a truly magical look.
If you want to travel from Tangier to Chefchaouen, there are three options.

Is Tangier safe?
Yes.
In general, Morocco is very safe, and since Tangier attracts a lot of tourists snooping around, special attention is paid to safety.
Of course, like anywhere else, you shouldn’t do stupid things. Adjust to the local culture and try to avoid accidents or dangerous neighbors.
In Tangier, you will feel safe in no time with the many European tourists.
