5 Reasons Your Lash Extensions Fall Out
Unfortunately, lash extensions do have a high rate of fall out. You’ll be relieved to hear that many issues can be prevented and others are just part of life with extensions if you’re anything like me. I polled some of my lash artist friends to see if they could answer why their clients’ lashes were falling out and what advice they had for clients about starting lash extensions.
Here’s what they said
- Not taking care of your natural lashes: Just because you got extensions doesn’t mean you should neglect your natural lashes! You still need to take care of them by using oils or serums, avoiding products that contain alcohol or acetone (including nail polish remover), and applying mascara as usual. The most important thing is not to rip off your eyelashes when removing makeup. I know it seems counterintuitive, but pulling them off gently will keep them from breaking at the roots.
- Overusing glue: Applying too much glue on top of your natural lashes makes them stick together and weakens both sets over time—this also happens when applying too much glue during refills. Remember to use only a thin layer and let it dry completely before opening your eyes.
- Using expired adhesive: As with any product, there’s no way to tell how effective it will be once a bond has expired. Don’t risk having an allergic reaction or falling out prematurely; make sure you always use fresh adhesive!
- Not being gentle enough: Even though extensions are made of synthetic hair, they still need to be treated delicately to last long-term. Be careful not to rub them excessively when washing your face, and avoid oil-based skincare products which can break down the bond between extension hair and skin.
Trying to remove old extensions yourself: Unless you’ve been trained by a professional, don’t try to remove old lashes yourself.
