People lack the motivation to care about their clothes because they know the new trend is just around the corner, and their outfits will shortly be out of style. They dispose of their clothes very soon.

The bigger problem with the fast fashion industry is that the bulk of garments are neither recycled nor donated. Instead, they are disposed of in landfills or incinerated.

Adverse effects of fast fashion

1- Fast fashion has detrimental effects on the environment and economy. It contributes to pollution by producing cheap clothes and emitting 8-10% of global carbon.

2- Many chemicals used to manufacture these low-cost garments end up in landfills. They are released back into the atmosphere after being discarded.

3- Wastewater effluent from garment factories has turned once-thriving rivers in China, India, and Bangladesh into biologically dead areas overflowing with cancer-causing chemicals. Our water supplies and food chain are being flooded by tiny plastic microfibers shed by synthetic fabrics during washing.

Fast fashion brands- cause of global pollution

Fast fashion is the Second Most polluting sector after the oil industry, accounting for 10% of global carbon emissions. Every year, quick fashion firms produce 150 billion pieces of apparel. Since the garments are made of low-cost fabrics, people discard them after just a few uses in favor of new clothing.

Brands like Zara, H&M, and Boohoo are causing global environmental damage. Zara alone produces 840 million apparel a year for its 6,000 outlets worldwide, mainly at meager wages for the workers.

These brands also contribute to local waterway contaminationand the release of “noxious gases.”

Fast fashion brands, in addition to polluting the environment, often exploit their overseas staff to increase profits. Fast fashion is terrible for workers, in particular young and underage women. These people work long hours for low wages and in hazardous working environments risking their healths and lives.
